What do famous authors think when they look back at their earlier books? The English branch of PEN, the international writers’ organization that promotes free expression, is finding out by inviting fifty authors, including J.K. Rowling, Julian Barnes, Margaret Atwood, Tom Stoppard, and Nobel Prizewinner Nadine Gordimer, to write notes in copies of their very first published work.

The works will be auctioned next Tuesday in London by Sotheby’s, with all proceeds to benefit English PEN’s work.

AFP: Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg has said in an interview published Saturday it is OK for women to cry at work, share emotions and be honest about their femininity.

In an interview with India’s Mint business daily, the 43-year-old admitted: “I cry at work,” adding women are not “one type of person Monday through Friday” and “then a different person in the nights and weekend.”

Using videos games to teach programming

Computer scientists at UCSD have developed a video game designed to teach elementary school students how to program in Java. In CodeSpells, you are a wizard and your task is to learn how to read, write and cast spells (aka Java programs) in an interactive and fun way.

CodeSpells was influenced by research conducted on how successful programmers learn their trade. They surveyed 30 computer scientists and identified five characteristics that are key to learn programming outside a classroom setting: activities must be structured by the person who is trying to learn; learning must be creative and exploratory; programming is empowering; learners have difficulty stopping once they start; and learners spend countless hours on the activity.

“While Aase was trying to calm down her daughter, she said, an employee of Rust Library demanded that Aase remove her daughter from the building. Then, Aase said, the employee threatened to do so herself. After that, she threatened to call police.

What could have been a passing tantrum has now become a fight over the rights of the disabled, a fight that Aase, well versed in such matters, has vowed to continue. She has filed two complaints under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) — one with Loudoun County and one with the U.S. Department of Justice.”

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the purpose of MLS and MLIS degrees, and I really believe there needs to be just a basic competency class because of situations like this. Thoughts?

Agreed. You often receive information about this at conferences, workshops or specialized trainings, not in library school. Everyone should be exposed to this early on, especially if you plan to work in public services.

Liu noted that library policy allows employees to request the removal of any patron who is disturbing the atmosphere of the library.”

How many other libraries have a policy like this? I’ve never heard of it before. In my experience, library management or security can request the removal of patrons. (I would still consider this situation to be a completely inappropriate use of that. This individual’s behavior does not sound out of ordinary to me, disability or no.)
